Hints for Moving |
Here is a checklist with a rough timeline for moving into your new home:
6 WEEKS BEFORE MOVE:
-
If you’re planning a garage sale, set a date.
-
If you have children, arrange to transfer school records including Vaccination records.
-
Get familiar with schools in your new community. See School page
-
Notify insurance companies of your move. If needed, make new arrangements for auto and home coverage.
-
Start a “Move File” for all receipts, papers and estimates related to your move.
4 WEEKS BEFORE MOVE:
-
Choose a van line / rental truck company you will use and give them tentative pick-up / deliver dates.

If you are moving to a new city, be sure and ask your attorney, doctor and other providers for referrals and any necessary records.

If you have pets, schedule a check-up and be sure to get a copy of their records from the veterinarian.
-
Set schedules with real estate agents and/or landlords.
-
Arrange to have your mail forwarded to your new home and inform financial institutions of your new address.
-
Terminate club & organization memberships and check if refunds available. Notify your church.
-
Notify all applicable services such as lawn, pest control, security - check for refunds if on contract.
2 WEEKS BEFORE MOVE:
-
Schedule disconnect date with your local utility company, cable company, and phone company.

Notify new utility company, cable company, and phone company of connect dates for your new home.

Transfer magazine and other subscriptions.

If you have a lawnmower or any other power equipment, drain oil and gasoline. Moving companies will not transport otherwise.

Cancel newspaper delivery and trash pickup effective on your move date

Set appointments to have your new home cleaned: Carpets, drawers & cabinets etc. before moving in. See Buyer Service

Verify that home is move-in ready with any repairs completed.
1 WEEK BEFORE MOVE:

Have floorplan made out of new home so movers can put heavy items the right place.

Make back-up copies of computer files and any important paper documents not traveling with you.

Create a "Welcome box" to be packed last for easy retrieval, containing: Medications, toiletries, towels, linens, first aid kit, garbage bags, Flashlight, spare light bulbs, (pet food?) and basic tools for assembling beds if needed.

Familiarize yourself with your new community including addresses for: Driver license & car registration, local postoffice, Library school & hospital.

Ask your Realtor to make sure an updated phonebook are available in your new home.
